Sailfish OS is a Finnish mobile operating system from Jolla, built on a Linux base with a gesture-driven interface, and with over a decade of commercial deployment behind it.
Why we still choose it
Because it is the most mature option of the three, and because it is European. For organisations whose concern is jurisdiction rather than ideology, a mobile platform developed and supported inside the EU is a materially different proposition from one that is not — and Sailfish has been deployed in regulated and government contexts on exactly that basis.
The interface is genuinely good rather than merely functional. Gesture navigation and the multitasking model hold up against anything, and unlike most alternatives it has had a decade of real users finding the rough edges.
Where it fits
Deployments where an organisation wants European vendor support alongside a handset it controls, and where Android application compatibility is needed as a fallback rather than a default.
The honest limit
It is open core, not fully open source — parts of the interface are proprietary, which for some clients is disqualifying and we say so plainly. The device roster is limited, and licensing for commercial deployment is a conversation with Jolla rather than a download.
Where full openness matters more than vendor support, postmarketOS is the better answer.
